Mitsui Fudosan Begins Field Testing on Payment System Using Facial Recognition at Ginza 6-Chome-SQUARE

Tokyo, Japan, February 21, 2019 - Mitsui Fudosan Co., Ltd., a leading global real estate company headquartered in Tokyo, announced today that it in line with its relocation to Nihonbashi-Muromachi Mitsui Tower in August 2019 (building scheduled for completion in March 2019), an entrance/exit security system with facial recognition technology will be installed on the floors occupied by the Company in order to improve convenience for employees and strengthen office security. In addition, field testing will begin in April 2019 on a payment system that uses facial recognition technology at Ginza 6-Chome-SQUARE, the office building the Company currently occupies.
Mitsui Fudosan promotes the use of various ICT technologies at the office buildings it operates and manages in order to increase office worker convenience and productivity, enhance facility security and raise the added value of building management. The Company intends to leverage the expertise and practical know-how it acquires from installing the entrance/exit system and field testing the payment system, both using facial recognition technology, in its urban development, office design, office services and other activities going forward.
1. Entrance/exit security system with facial recognition technology
Mitsui Fudosan is installing a special-order system it has created jointly with Panasonic Corporation based on Panasonic’s KPAS entrance/exit security & office visualization system (*1) at the entrance doors to the dedicated office space it will occupy and at the security gate in the elevator hall. The system is comprised of a gate, checker (device for dedicated space entrance), management server and facial recognition server. The facial data can be batch-registered with photographs, so the burden on administrators is minimal. The data is also expected to prevent impersonation with borrowed cards and unauthorized entrance, as well as reduce the risk of lost cards and the cost of their reissue.

2. Payment system with facial recognition technology
Mitsui Fudosan will be field testing a facial recognition-based payment service(*2) that uses NeoFace, a facial recognition AI engine provided by NEC Corporation (“NEC”), at the Kakoi employee cafeteria in Ginza 6-Chome-Square, the building the Company currently occupies. The system allows users to easily register their own facial recognition data using a smartphone/tablet app. User credit card information is managed by the credit card company, and the facial data is managed by NEC’s facial recognition payment service, so retailers handle no personal information or credit card information, allowing them to lighten their own security measures.
Decisions will be made related to installation of the payment system on floors occupied by Mitsui Fudosan at Nihonbashi-Muromachi Mitsui Tower after continued evaluation and review of general biometric payment technologies, including facial recognition.
