Shimadzu Corporation has invested in RLWRLD Inc. (RLWRLD), through its Corporate Venture Capital (CVC) fund, “Shimadzu Future Innovation Fund” (Shimadzu FIF). RLWRLD is developing AI foundation models for humanoid and other types of robots used in the manufacturing industry.

The reductions in the labor force caused by population decline and aging are emerging as social issues, leading to increased adoption of robots in manufacturing fields. However, current robots have limited capabilities and cannot adapt as flexibly as humans. RLWRLD is developing AI foundation models for operational robots that possess intricate movements and versatility by utilizing AI learning with real-world data transformed into 3D using videos and markers. Moreover, RLWRLD is simultaneously developing robots equipped with this AI foundation, which is expected to lead to a significant improvement in the productivity of operational robots. RLWRLD brings together top-tier researchers from KAIST Graduate School of AI and Seoul National University, collaborating with the manufacturing sites of companies in both Japan and South Korea to advance rapid research and development.

Automation needs exist in both manufacturing and research and development, Shimadzu has developed autonomous experimental systems (Autonomous Lab). Through this investment, Shimadzu aims to promote the societal implementation of autonomous experimental systems in fields such as biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and new material development.
