Shimadzu Forest, which is located at the Shimadzu Head Office and Sanjo Works (Kyoto, Japan), has been recognized by the Ministry of the Environment as a Nature Coexistence Site. The term Nature Coexistence Site refers to a system by the Japanese government for the recognition of regions in which the aim is to conserve biodiversity through public initiatives. The recognition system was started in 2023 based on 30by30^*1, which was agreed to at the G7 Summit in 2021. Unless the recognized region overlaps with a protected area, it is registered as OECM^*2 in an international database, thereby making a direct contribution to reaching 30by30 as a conservation region in Japan.

Approximately 1,100 trees have been planted in Shimadzu Forest, which is approximately 8,000 m² in size, and our customers and employees enjoy the area as a place to relax. In order to cultivate an environment conducive to breeding for wild birds, we are raising trees and plants with an emphasis on native species, thereby protecting nature and preserving our culture for future generations. At present, Kyoto Prefecture is recognized as the habitat for 17 species of birds and 22 species of butterfly, including Chestnut tiger butterfly , which is classified as endangered. Additionally, in collaboration with Ritsumeikan University, we are measuring the number of microorganisms in the soil. Shimadzu total organic carbon (TOC) analyzers are used to measure the total amount of carbon, which is one index of this.
In 2015 we became the first manufacturing company in western Japan to win the maximum AAA rating under the Japan Habitat Evaluation & Certification Program (JHEP), a system that certifies efforts to conserve and restore biodiversity through the Ecosystem Conservation Society-Japan, a rating that we maintain even now.

Shimadzu Corporation is actively taking initiatives for environmental conservation including participation to date in the 30by30 Alliance for Biodiversity by the Ministry of the Environment. In future we will continue to contribute to the achievement of a sustainable society while aiming for harmonization of the earth, society, and humanity.
