Azbil Kimmon and Kamstrup collaborate to address water infrastructure
challenges with next-generation ultrasonic smart water meters
-
Creating new value in the Japanese market through strategic partnership -
TOKYO, September 25, 2025: Azbil Kimmon Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo; President: Kenji Okumura) has announced its collaboration with Kamstrup (Head Office: Denmark), a global leader in smart
water metering solutions, to launch next-generation ultrasonic smart water meters in
the Japanese market starting in the second quarter of 2026. In addition, Azbil Kimmon will introduce Kamstrup’s machine learning-based cloud service for leak detection.
With Japan’s aging water infrastructure, labor shortages, and rising operational costs, there is a growing demand for solutions to efficient leak detection and maintenance problems. To address these challenges, next-generation smart water metering solutions that leverage advanced technologies are required. In July 2025, Azbil Kimmon formalized an agreement with Kamstrup to jointly develop the Japanese market. Through this partnership, Azbil Kimmon aims to create solutions tailored to Japan, focusing on leveraging innovative technologies to address societal challenges and foster high-value-added services in the Japanese water industry. The key initiatives of this collaboration are as follows:
1. Development and launch of next-generation ultrasonic smart water meters for the Japanese market The new ultrasonic smart water meters provide highly accurate measurement capabilities even at low flow rates and outperform, outperforming conventional mechanical meters. Jointly developed specifically for the Japanese market, these meters are lightweight and compact with no moving parts, ensuring exceptional durability. Furthermore, their battery-optimized design enables a significantly extended lifespan that far exceeds the current legal verification period

of 8 years.
2. Machine learning-based cloud service for leak detection Utilizing data collected by smart meters, the system integrates Azbil Kimmon’s proprietary SMaaS
*2
platform with Kamstrup’s cloud service, which employs data from more than 1 million connected water meters globally. By analyzing the noise data collected through smart meters using machine-learning algorithms, the service can accurately identify leak-prone areas both upstream and downstream of the smart meter, contributing to more efficient water infrastructure maintenance.
3. Expanding collaborative efforts In the first year, Azbil Kimmon will conduct a pilot project in collaboration with a broad range of stakeholders in the water industry, including water utilities and service providers specializing in leak detection solutions. These efforts aim to evaluate the effectiveness of these solutions in the Japanese market. We will also consider further “co-creation” with the azbil Group, as outlined in the Group’s Medium-term Plan, in our relationship with Kamstrup.
From October 29 to 31, 2025, Azbil Kimmon will be exhibiting its products alongside Azbil Corporation at the 2025 Hiroshima Waterworks Exhibition. Visitors will have the opportunity to experience next-generation ultrasonic smart water meters and machine learning-based leak detection cloud services firsthand. We cordially invite you to visit our booth to explore these cutting-edge solutions. Guided by the Azbil Group’s corporate philosophy of “human-centered automation,” Azbil Kimmon remains committed to addressing societal challenges and contributing to the preservation of the global environment through innovative solutions and sustainable practices.
*1 Legal verification period The period during which a water meter is recognized as meeting the standards for accurate measurement. In Japan, this period is stipulated by law and serves as an important criterion to ensure that the water meter functions properly as a measuring instrument.
*2 Smart Metering as a Service (SMaaS) A business model that goes beyond traditional metering functionality, leveraging data to deliver new value-added services.
