Launch of Collaborative Research Division by Tokyo Institute of Technology and AGC
Tokyo Institute of Technology
Asahi Glass Co., Ltd.
Tokyo Institute of Technology (President: Mr. Kenichi Iga, hereinafter collectively referred to as Tokyo
Tech) and AGC (Asahi Glass Co., Ltd.; Head Office: Tokyo; President & CEO: Kazuhiko Ishimura) have
decided to launch “AGC Collaborative Research Division for Glass and Inorganic Materials” in the
Materials and Structures Laboratory of Tokyo Tech on April 1
st
, 2010. The research division aims to
undertake basic research on glass and to develop new inorganic materials, while training researchers who
will be responsible for research on next-generation materials.
Dr. Setsuro Ito (PhD in Engineering), a former fellow of AGC Research Center, will assume the position of
professor of the division, and be responsible for basic glass research and development of new inorganic
materials, supported by several assistant professors. The division will work not only to obtain results
directly from collaborative research, but also, as a long-term goal, to provide an environment for attracting
and training the next generation of researchers by enhancing basic research on materials, which universities
currently tend to overlook as objects of research.
In addition, Professor Hideo Hosono (PhD in Engineering) of the Materials and Structures Laboratory
of Tokyo Tech will concurrently take up the position of professor of the division, and will promote mainly
the development of inorganic materials. The research division will also carry out glass-related basic
research in cooperation with Professor Shuichi Shibata (PhD in Engineering) of the Department of
Chemistry and Materials.
The division was established as the first task of a program for lectures on collaborative research and
divisions established by Tokyo Tech in June 2009.
