Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd. (Head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Kazuhisa Nakano) announced today that it has launched commercial production at its engineering plastic compound manufacturing plant in Guangzhou, China, construction of which has been ongoing since October 2008.
The new plant has begun polycarbonate (PC) production as a manufacturing base for PC, syndiotactic polystyrene (SPS) and polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) initially using two extruder lines. Manufacturing will be expanded to three extruder lines by May with a scheduled annual production of 10,000 tons.
Export Processing Zone, the location of this plant, is a free trade zone suitable for bonded business , the products of this plant will supply efficiently and economically to not only re-export demand in China, but also re-export to outside of China.
The outlook is for continued future growth in demand for compound resins such as PC, SPS and PPS in regions throughout Asia, particularly in China. The principal applications for PC are liquid crystal displays, electrical and electronic equipment, business machines and home appliances. PPS compounds are mainly applied to use as a metal substitute for their precision-molding and heat-radiation characteristics. In addition, due to the future increase in automobile production, SPS has a growing demand for automotive electronic components in the forecast. To meet this growing demand, Idemitsu Kosan is planning to increase production capacity at the new plant to achieve an annual production capacity of 20,000 tons in 2011.
Idemitsu Kosan will make optimum use of its resources including compound and quality-control technologies at the new plant to manufacture engineering compounds of even higher quality and to firm up its system for supply to customers in China and Southeast Asia.
