Large Rise in the Use of “Corrugated Steel Plate Earthquake-Resisting Wall” for New Building and Renewal Work
Use has widened since the 2009 Performance Evaluation Revisions allowing use in Steel structures as well as RC structures

Takenaka Corporation
Takenaka Corporation (President: Toichi Takenaka) has used the patented “Corrugated Steel Plate Earthquake-Resistant Walls,” developed by Takenaka in 2007, in 12 projects such as the Higobashi MID Building (in Nishi-ku, Osaka) and the Hiroshima Institute of Technology Building 9 earthquake-resistance strengthening work (in Saeki-ku, Hiroshima).
These walls can now be used in Steel structures, as well as RC structures, which was possible since the walls were developed. After reviewing the results of numerous tests and analyses, in 2009 performance evaluation was revised.
Regardless of the type of building, these walls will be used widely in the future for new buildings and renewal work of both RC and Steel structures, with safety performance maintained based on objective evaluation.
【Outline of the “Corrugated Steel Plate Earthquake-Resistiant Walls”】
The steel plates are made into a waveform so as to be able to freely expand and contract in the direction of the waveform, much like an accordion. They also have the strength to resist any force orthogonal to waveform direction, such as horizontal seismic force. These plates are used in combination with a column and beam frame, and this frame takes the long-term load and the corrugated steel plates mainly take the horizontal load. Because it is clear which part resists each load, the rigidity and the bearing capacity can be easily adjusted, which makes a dramatic increase in the design freedom possible.

【Merits of using the “Corrugated Steel Plate Earthquake-Resistant Walls” in Steel structures】
In RC structures, “Corrugated Steel Plate Earthquake-Resisting Walls” have been used as a new type of earthquake-resistant wall. However, in ordinary Steel structures, braces are used as the earthquake-resistant parts. By using the “Corrugated Steel Plate Earthquake-Resisting Walls,” the walls themselves can be used as the earthquake-resistant parts, providing the following merits.
1.Realizing high safety and low damage performance during a major earthquake
The rigidity and load-bearing capacity of the “Corrugated Steel Plate Earthquake-Resisting Walls” can be flexibly adjusted compared to steel braces, and even during a major earthquake, high safety performance can be maintained. The walls also have a high structural-control effect due to excellent energy-absorption capability, thereby reducing the damage to the building.
2.Increased area efficacy rate and design freedom level
Compared to ordinary steel braces, it is possible to install the “Corrugated Steel Plate Earthquake-Resisting Walls” into a narrow space such as inside the walls. This increases the area efficacy rate, and increases the level of design freedom for the space.
3.Concurrent construction can be carried out while the steel frame is being assembled
In the construction using conventional steel plate walls and steel plate studs, to prevent the introduction of axial force, often the joining work is carried out last. However, in the construction using “Corrugated Steel Plate Earthquake-Resisting Walls,” the walls do not resist against vertical deformation, so there is no need to carry out any work last, as is the case with contemporary steel plate walls and steel plate studs.
【Case studies】
□Case study of use in new steel building: “Higobashi MID Building”
A new rental office building was constructed in central Osaka. To increase the safety performance during a major earthquake, “Corrugated Steel Plate Earthquake-Resisting Walls” were used for the first time as the structural control device in a steel building.
