Development of “Suburban Cloud Computing Data Center” Where Server Wings Can Be Added
Proposal for the construction and operation of a cloud computing data center which will lead to revitalization of local areas

Takenaka Corporation (President: Toichi Takenaka) has developed a “Suburban Cloud Computing Data Center,” consisting of a central administration building, with air-conditioning and power outlet facilities, and server wings which can be added to the central administration building as required according to the number of servers. The facility spans out from the center of a site. The width of the server wing has been set for optimum air-conditioning efficiency, and by implementing energy conservation measures in the entire building such as solar energy generation and snow cooling systems in cold regions, a data center has been realized which is environmentally-friendly and reduces running costs at the same time.

【The Takenaka “Suburban Cloud Computing Data Center” proposal scheme】

Because a large site is required for the “Suburban Cloud Computing Data Center,” the main target is for industrial parks where the infrastructure is already in place. It is also possible to install power storage equipment, so as a heavy consumer, the facility could contribute to the establishment of a smart grid which manages the adjustment of electric power distribution to the surrounding buildings.
In collaboration with corporations providing cloud computing using this new data center, local government bodies that have industrial parks, and local electric power companies that supply large amounts of electricity, Takenaka is carrying out collaborative business with the involvement of local companies and local governments. For example, a business scheme could be possible where the central administration building is operated as a joint venture business between a local government, a power company, and a communications company, and each of the server wings could be built or rented by different data center companies. In such a scheme, it would be easier for the local government, the power company and the communications company to attract data centers or heavy consumers, and would enable planned infrastructure investment. Also, the data center business operators could assemble a data center in a short period of time, reduce initial costs, and receive stable power supply.

【Merits】

■Additional server wings can be added as required
Because the server wings are independent of the central administration building, it is possible to add server wings as required. With a steel frame structure and precast concrete exterior walls, the extension work is possible in a short period after beginning the design.

■A modular framework（※1）, enabling flexible response to multigrades and multitiers（※2）
With a modular framework, the grade and backup tiers can be freely set per server wing, or even for a necessary size within a server wing. These module settings can be changed even after the server wing begins operation.

The design concept where the server rack layout, the electrical power equipment and the air-conditioning equipment is considered a small assembly unit

By changing the amount of electricity and air-conditioning supplied, and the number of backup equipment in small units, there can be a mixture of different levels of service grades and tiers (reliability).

■Using various technologies to realize symbiosis with nature, and reducing running costs at the same time
With the aim of getting close to 1.1 PUE (power usage effectiveness)（※3）, this new data center uses renewable energy such as solar energy generation, snow cooling systems in cold regions, and air-conditioning systems using nearby rivers, in order to realize symbiosis with nature and a reduction of running costs at the same time.

A metric used to determine the energy efficiency of a data center, by dividing the amount of power entering a data center by the power used to run the computer infrastructure within it.

■The earthquake resistance is high because the server wings are structurally independent
Because the server wings are completely separate from the central administration building, the earthquake risk has been extremely reduced. Also, both the server wings can be constructed with either base isolation devices or with earthquake resistance technology.

■Equipment and administration functions are consolidated in the central administration building enabling efficient management
It is possible to consolidate the incoming power substation equipment and the refrigeration equipment in the central administration building. The security and equipment management manpower can also be consolidated, and the conference rooms, lounges, and car parking can be shared.

■Possible to install highly-reliable power supply and communications infrastructure
It is possible to install the incoming power substation and communications station inside the central administration building. Thus, so the electricity power supply and the communications can be directly enjoyed from the power company and the communications company, and there is an alleviation on the backup equipment.
