LED Lighting to Be Used throughout the Office Zone
20,600 units in an area of about 70,000 square meters

It has been decided to use 20,600 LED lighting units in the rental office zone (floors 15 to 36) of The Asahi Shimbun Company’s “Nakanoshima Festival Tower” (location: Kita-ku, Osaka; completion schedule: fall of 2012; design and supervision: Nikken Sekkei Ltd.; construction: Takenaka Corporation), as well as the office floors of The Asahi Shimbun Company’s Osaka Head Office (floors 9 to 12). The total area to be covered will be about 70,000 square meters, making it the largest area using LED lighting in Japan. This is the first time for LED lighting units to be used in a tenant office building in the Kansai region.

The LED lighting units to be used are being developed by Panasonic Electric Works, based on collaboration between the client, the designers and the construction companies, in the aim for an environmentally-friendly building. The units will be highly-efficient, and compared to the 12,000 hours life of fluorescent lighting（※1）, they will have 40,000 hours, or about three times more. In order to secure an illumination of 750 lux for comfortable work in the rental office zone with a ceiling height of three meters, one LED lighting unit is to be installed every 3.3 square meters, totaling 17,500 units. Including the units to be installed in the Asahi Shimbun floors, the number of units will total 20,600. Compared to conventional fluorescent lighting, power consumption will be reduced by about 37 percent（※2）.

With a heating and cooling system using river water, double-layered sashes which are highly-effective for the air-conditioning, and water recycling, the CO2 emissions from the Nakanoshima Festival Tower building will be reduced by 40 percent compared to ordinary buildings. As such, the building has been adopted as a “Model Business for Housing and Architecture Promoting CO2 Reduction” by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. With the planned use of LED lighting units, CO2 emissions will be cut even further.

【The Nakanoshima Festival Tower】

• Location：2-22 Nakanoshima, Kita-ku, Osaka
• Number of floors：39 fl. above (including 2 fl. penthouse) and 3 fl. below ground
• Height：about 200m.
• Site area：about 8,200m²
• Total floor space：about 146,000m²
• The lower floors will hold the Festival Hall, and the floors above that will hold the Asahi Shimbun Osaka Head Office. The higher floors will be rental office space.
• Important functions will be maintained even in the event of an earthquake measuring seven on the Japanese intensity scale, by using intermediate floor base isolation system.
• With heating and cooling system using river water, double-layered sashes enabling recirculation control of the air inside the windows, CO2 emissions will be reduced by 40 percent. Adopted as a “Model Business for Housing and Architecture Promoting CO2 Reduction” by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.
