Kyocera Corporation (President: Tetsuo Kuba) today announced the release of the K002 slim One-Seg mobile phone, a new KYOCERA-branded model for the Japanese domestic “au” carrier.
With the number of mobile phone subscribers in Japan now over 100 million, the market has entered a period of maturity. When choosing from the wide variety of mobile phones available, users are looking for both practicality of functions in a handset, and fashionable design as an accessory.
The K002 is geared mainly toward users in their 30s and 40s, who enjoy established lifestyles. The particular functions, design and other features demanded by this demographic were analyzed and a new KYOCERA-branded handset for au was developed using an approach that focused on condensing popular features into a slim body.
At just 10.9 mm, the ultra-thin K002 is the slimmest mobile phone in the au lineup to support One-Seg audio / visual data broadcasting, and Osaifu Keitai® electronic payment system functions. It also boasts a range of popular features including a 3.2 megapixel camera and a 3.0 inch IPS LCD screen, combining portability and functionality with its slim design and wealth of features.
With the use of hardened stainless steel, the front panel has achieved a slim profile, and special machining gives the handset a sharp, high-quality feel, making for a stylish design well suited for the mature user. The handset is available in four subtle color variations: Intelligent Black, Deep Red, Proud White, and Pink Gold.
The K002 is part of KDDI Corporation's new handset lineup, launched on May 25.

Main Features
1.) 10.9 mm ultra-slim body with One-Seg and Osaifu Keitai®
The K002 is a slim One-Seg mobile phone that packs a wide range of functions, including a One-Seg tuner, Osaifu Keitai® support, a 3.2 megapixel camera, and a 3.0-inch IPS LCD screen, all into a 10.9 mm body. Its slim lines were achieved through the use of hardened stainless steel for the front panel and tempered glass for the LCD screen.
2.) Stylish design befitting of an adult accessory
Achieving its slimness through the use of hardened stainless steel, the front panel design also gives the handset a rich look thanks to a reflective spin finish whose appearance changes depending on the light and viewing angle. In addition, the "slit illuminations" around the borders of the metallic parts at each end of the phone lends a sharp accent to the design. The design of the keys is modeled on a clock face. Due to the spacious key area and large font sizes, the keys are highly legible and attention has been paid to the touch, which also makes them easy to use.
3.) A wide range of highly usable functions condensed into a slim body
In addition to features such as One-Seg, Osaifu Keitai®, a 3.2 megapixel camera and a 3.0-inch IPS LCD screen, additional functions provided for great usability include the Sugu Moji quick character input function that allows users to input Japanese characters directly from the standby screen, and the Kanji Character Check function that comes in handy when users wish to look up a certain kanji character. The K002 also includes a new and unique feature known as Second Menu, which allows users to switch between two menu screens with the press of a single key a convenient function in both business and private settings. Other new features include a business card scanner, privacy settings to help guard personal information, and an information ticker that scrolls information across the top of the screen in a variety of situations, such as when receiving mail.
