ULVAC Awarded the First Kanagawa Award for the Prevention of Global Warming in the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Technology Development Category with the Development of a Quick Charge System for Electric Vehicles Using Solar Power Generation

ULVAC, Inc. (Headquarters: Chigasaki, Kanagawa; President and CEO: Hidenori Suwa; hereinafter described as ULVAC) have been awarded the Kanagawa Award for the Prevention of Global Warming, which is hosted by the Environmental Planning Division, Environment and Agriculture Department of the Kanagawa Prefectural Government. ULVAC received the award in the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Technology Development Category for its development of a quick charge system for electric vehicles (EV) using solar power generation.

The Kanagawa Award for the Prevention of Global Warming is awarded to companies, organizations, corporate bodies, and individuals that have excelled in developing measures against global warming and made a significant contribution to the reduction of greenhouse gases, based on the Kanagawa Prefectural Ordinance on the Prevention of Global Warming (Kanagawa Prefectural Ordinance No. 57, 2009) enacted in July 2009.
Between September 1st and November 30th, 2010, nominations were accepted from the general public for 2011, which is the first year of the awards. Nominees’ technologies were examined by a committee consisting of academics and specialists, and a total of 15 nominees (10 for the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Performance Category and 5 for the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Technology Development Category) were selected as recipients of the award. ULVAC were honored with the award for the following reasons.

ULVAC developed a quick charge system for EV using solar power generation in 2010. By using electricity generated by solar power generation panels, this system enables users to charge an EV to about 80% of its charging capacity in approximately 25 minutes. It is also possible to use the system to supply power to other facilities when it is not being used to charge EVs, which helps to cut CO₂ generation through the reduction of the use of electricity.
This was the first time a system that uses a combination of solar power generation panels and a quick charger for electric vehicles has been developed in Kanagawa Prefecture. As seen in the example of Chigasaki city municipal parking, which lost no time in introducing the system in March 2010, ULVAC’s development has been contributing to improvement of the charging infrastructure essential for the widespread use of EVs, as well as to the spread of environmentally-friendly energy.

The awards ceremony was held at Seminar Hall, on the 6th floor, of the Yokohama Media and Communications Center, Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture at 13:30 on Thursday, February 10, 2011.
