Effect of the Tohoku-Pacific Ocean Earthquake
On the JT Group within Japan (Fourth Report)
Japan Tobacco Inc. (JT) (TSE: 2914) would like to express first and foremost our deepest
sympathies to all those who have been affected by the Tohoku-Pacific Ocean Earthquake.
We hope that recovery will proceed quickly.
We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and trouble caused to our tobacco retailers
and consumers by our near-term measure announced on March 25, 2011 to limit the
number of products supplied and to temporarily withhold product shipments within Japan.
We very much appreciate your understanding as we do everything we can to normalize
our supply system as quickly as possible, aiming for a complete recovery at the earliest
feasible time.
With a smaller product range, we are increasing production in our factories located in the
western half of Japan, namely in our Tokai, Hamamatsu, Kansai and Kyushu factories.
We will resume shipment from April 11, as scheduled, of the following seven products.
Product Name Price
Mild Seven 410
Mild Seven One 410
Mild Seven One 100’s Box 410
Seven Stars 440
Caster One 100’s Box 410
Cabin Mild Box 410
Echo 240
We are planning to gradually increase both the range of products to be shipped and the
shipment volume from April 11, with a plan to start shipping out the 25 key products
from mid-May. We will continue to do everything we can to normalize our supply
system as quickly as possible.
This update is not related to the activities of Japan Tobacco International (JTI) where
worldwide operations continue as usual.
The following is an update on our group’s Pharmaceutical and Food Businesses.
1. Pharmaceutical Business
Both our Pharmaceutical Research Institute and Torii Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd.,
our group company, have suffered limited damage. Also, the company’s
Sakura Plant located in Chiba is functioning normally.
2. Food Business
The Processed Foods and Seasonings Businesses of TableMark Co., Ltd., our group
company, and its subsidiaries have suffered no major damage to their production
facilities, maintaining nearly normal manufacturing capabilities. However, a
processing factory of the company’s subsidiary handling fishery business located in
Ibaraki has suffered damage and is not operating. Further, our Beverage Business,
affected by damage to its suppliers and scheduled blackouts, is in the process of
recovery to normal business operation. Our group’s Food Business is maximizing
production and supply of mineral water, packaged cooked rice and cup-type instant
noodles as much as possible from the added viewpoint of proactive relief support to
the disaster stricken areas. The business is also contributing to render relief support
including donating supplies and serving hot meals in those areas. We will continue
to work toward stable ingredient sourcing and to monitor development of scheduled
blackouts in order to implement appropriate measures.
While the effects of damage and our near-term measure following the earthquake have
not been confirmed, an announcement will be made immediately if the impact on our
performance is projected to be significant.
