Shiseido to Participate in the Eco-First Commitment to Save Power this
summer as a certified Eco-First Company
As a certified Eco-First Company, Shiseido will participate in the Eco-First Commitment to Save
Power in Summer 2011, a program promoted by the Ministry of the Environment. May 18, 2011, the
Company made a commitment to the Minister of the Environment Ryu Matsumoto with regard to its
own initiatives.
The Eco-First Commitment to Save Power in Summer 2011
As a measure to cope with the reduced power supply this summer, the Eco-First Companies, which
undertake various environmental protection initiatives as leaders of their respective industries, will
announce their commitments regarding their own power-saving initiatives to the Minister on a
voluntary basis.
The Eco-First Program was created by the Ministry of the Environment in April 2008 to
“encourage leading companies in each industry to redouble their environmental protection activities
by inviting them to make a commitment to the Minister of the Environment concerning their
environmental protection initiatives such as global warming countermeasures and measures
regarding waste treatment and recycling.”
In March 2009, Shiseido was the first cosmetics company to receive Eco-First Company
certification.
Shiseido’s Eco-First Commitment to Save Power in Summer 2011
The following is a summary of the commitments Shiseido has made to the Minister of the
Environment. For details, see the attached reference information.
• Shiseido will undertake a companywide effort to reduce its total power consumption in the Kanto
and Tohoku regions by at least 20% by implementing various initiatives at its factories, offices, and
other major power-consuming sites.
• Shiseido will encourage its employees and their families to carry out power-saving initiatives at
home, while supporting customers who wish to lead an energy-efficient life by providing
ecologically friendly products.
Shiseido’s Environmental Activities
Shiseido has pursued an array of environmental activities under the Shiseido Eco Policy adopted in
1992 as its environmental management policy. In 2009, the Company started its Shiseido Earth Care
Project, an environmental initiative involving all employees around the world. Furthermore,
Shiseido established the Production Eco Standard and the Office Eco Standard as environmental
standards for its factories and offices, respectively. Through such initiatives, the Company strives to
reduce CO2 emissions and save resources in all its business activities. Shiseido intends to further
strengthen these initiatives this coming summer.
The Eco-First Commitment to Save Power in Summer 2011
May 18, 2011
Mr. Ryu Matsumoto
Minister of the Environment
Hisayuki Suekawa
President & CEO (Representative Director)
Shiseido Co., Ltd.
Shiseido Co., Ltd. will undertake the following across-the-board initiatives to reduce its total power
consumption in the Kanto and Tohoku regions during July–September 2011 by at least 20% of
10,900 kW, which is the total amount of power consumed at its domestic company-owned offices in
the same period of the previous year.
Shiseido will also support power-saving efforts at general households this summer by encouraging
its employees and their families to carry out various home-based measures, while providing
customers with beauty information and advice that will help them save energy without sacrificing
comfort.
1. Initiatives to be pursued at factories and other major power-consuming sites
a) Kamakura Factory/Kuki Factory
• We will reduce the total amount of power consumed by adopting a rolling blackout program
in which buildings within the factories will take turns to switch off their power for a period.
• We will reduce peak-hour power consumption by shifting weekday daytime operations to
early-morning and nighttime hours, as well as to weekends and national holidays.
• We will move up the production schedule to May and June, and transfer production to
factories in areas within Japan where the electricity supply is expected to remain stable.
• We will reduce daytime power consumption by conducting production during nighttime
hours.
b) Shiseido Research Centers (Shin Yokohama, Kanazawa Hakkei)
• We will reduce power consumption by enhancing the operating efficiency of ice thermal
storage systems used in air-conditioning units and constant-temperature/humidity chambers.
c) Computer Center
• We will operate the Computer Center from 9:00 to 20:00 on weekdays by utilizing a
privately owned emergency power generator.
d) Shonan Training Institute
• We will suspend additional operation of freezing machines for air-conditioning during
weekdays from 9:00 to 20:00.
2. Initiatives to be pursued at offices etc.
• We will reduce power consumption by ensuring reduced use of lighting, for example, by
removing some of the fluorescent tubes.
• We will reduce the use of air-conditioning by extending the government-sponsored “Cool
Biz” program to cover the period from May to October, encouraging the wearing of light
clothing, and strictly maintaining the room temperature at 28°C.
• We will turn off the lights and close our Head Office at 20:00, two hours earlier than the
present office-closing time of 22:00. We will also implement the “Morning Biz” program to
encourage all employees to change their work style and work earlier in the day instead of
late at night.
• We will pursue a companywide effort to save power and reduce CO2 emissions by
performing the above measures not only in regions covered by Tokyo Electric Power
Company and Tohoku Electric Power Co., Ltd., but also at other offices nationwide.
3. Encouraging employees to pursue power-saving efforts
• We will encourage employees and their families to carry out home-based power-saving
measures by providing them with useful tips for saving energy at home.
4. Supporting customers’ power-saving efforts
• We will support our business partners and customers in their efforts to save power in their
daily lives by actively suggesting innovative ways of using Shiseido’s products to maintain
beauty and comfort while at the same time saving power.
