10th Anniversary of ‘The Inamori-Kyocera Western Development Scholarship Fund’ Commemorated at Ningxia University in China

On June 9, a commemoration ceremony was held for the 10th anniversary of The Inamori-Kyocera Western Development Scholarship Fund at Ningxia University in China. The ceremony was attended by roughly 300 people including China-Japan Friendship Association Vice President Xu Jinping, Ningxia University President He Jianguo, China Friendship Foundation for Peace & Development Secretary-General Hu Jianhuai, and Kyocera Corporation Chairman Emeritus Kazuo Inamori, as well as scholarship recipients from 12 universities in Xinjiang, Tibet, Qinghai, Gansu, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Sichuan, Guangxi, Yunnan, Guizhou, Inner Mongolia and Ningxia.

The Inamori-Kyocera Western Development Scholarship Fund was established in 2001 with a donation from Kyocera Corporation and its Founder & Chairman Emeritus Kazuo Inamori which was presented to the China Friendship Foundation for Peace & Development via the China-Japan Friendship Association in order to support the Chinese Government's Great Western Development Strategy to promote regional development. The Fund's purpose is to financially assist economically disadvantaged university students in China's western regions who show both outstanding academic achievement and high moral character. The Fund aims to foster individuals who will use their education and expertise to aid regional development through science and technology.
“I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, the China-Japan Friendship Association, the China Friendship Foundation for Peace & Development and personnel at the recipient universities, whose hard work and effort have made it possible for this scholarship fund to mark its 10th year,” stated Kazuo Inamori during a speech at the commemoration ceremony. “Furthermore, I would like to ask all of the past recipients to fully embrace the founding goal of this fund, and to continue accumulating knowledge so that you may become a core part of the development of the western regions. Moreover, I believe that through your efforts you will help contribute to the further development of your country and the strengthening of trust and friendship between China and Japan.”
In FY2011, scholarship funds were granted to 285 students at 12 universities in China's western regions, with a total of 2,721 students having benefited from the Fund as of March 2011.
