Orders for two large-scale projects awarded in Singapore268 Orchard Road and the National Heart Centre
SHIMIZU CORPORATION (President, Yoichi Miyamoto) has accepted orders for two major construction projects, one from a Singaporean real estate company and another from the Singapore government.
The order from the real estate company calls for the construction of a commercial facility (tentative name: 268 Orchard Road) along the center of Orchard Road, Singapore’s busiest area. The value of the order is roughly 8.3 billion yen. The facility will have 12 levels above ground, one level below ground, and a gross floor area of 20,072 m2.
The project timetable calls for a work period of 32 months, from April 15, 2011, to December 15, 2013. Expected to serve as a new Orchard Road landmark upon its completion, the facility is designed to recall a glass box. The client is RE Properties Pte. Ltd. To date, members of the client’s group of companies have submitted five major construction orders to Shimizu, one of which was Ngee Ann City, a massive commercial complex on Orchard Road. The 268 Orchard Road project marks the first time Shimizu has been selected directly by the client. Direct selection by local companies of a Japanese company to handle such large projects is rare.
The second large-scale project is the National Heart Centre, a special cardiac treatment hospital, an order granted by the Singapore government. The value of this order is approximately 11.2 billion yen. The proposed facility will have nine levels above ground, three levels below ground, and a gross floor area of 60,680 m2. Work is slated to occur over a two-year period, starting May 18, 2011, and ending May 17, 2013. The quality of our previous work, our technological proposals, and construction experience with medical facilities in Japan, including hospitals, all contributed to this order.
Shimizu is currently pushing forward with its overseas operations as an important pillar of its long-term vision, with the goal of establishing a framework wherein work done outside Japan will account for 20% of all sales by 2020. Shimizu plans to develop the human resources needed and to expand the activities required to implement this strategy.

The total cost of the project was 334.5 million Singapore dollars (roughly 27 billion yen at the current exchange rate). The facility consists of intelligent twin towers rising 27 levels above ground and a low-rise building rising seven stories and connecting the two towers. The twin towers house office space, while the low-rise building houses a large-scale retail center, including a Takashimaya location.
