The European Commission’s Decision on CRT Glass Business
Asahi Glass Co., Ltd.
The European Commission notified Asahi Glass on October 19, 2011 (Japan time) of its decision to impose a total fine of 45.1 million euros (approximately 4.8 billion Japanese yen) in accordance with the settlement procedures concerning anticompetitive behavior in the CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) glass sector in Europe.
With regard to the Company’s CRT glass business, Asahi Glass did not have a production base in Europe in the past, and it has already withdrawn from the business. Since last year, Asahi Glass has been engaged in settlement discussions with the European Commission, and decided to settle with the Commission after a careful and comprehensive consideration of the possible legal cost increases and impacts on the Group’s business. The Company already made sufficient provision for loss caused by this fine in its financial statement.
Further to this, as stated in the “Business Risks” section of the Company’s Financial Review 2010, the CRT glass business is being investigated by the Korean Fair Trade Commission as well.
