Performing Disaster Recovery over the Internet
Using Data Compression and Asynchronous Processing
- Protecting Paraca's Critical Information Assets with Real-Time Data Replication between Tokyo and Osaka -
SIOS Technology, Inc. (Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President: Mr. Nobuo KITA; hereinafter referred to as SIOS; listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Mothers Index, number 3744) has supplied Paraca Inc. (hereinafter referred to as Paraca) with DataKeeper software, which offers data replication (*1) functionality, and performed disaster recovery between Tokyo and Osaka via the Internet (wide area IP transmission network). In most cases, this type of disaster recovery is performed using expensive leased lines with guaranteed bandwidths, but DataKeeper makes data compression and asynchronous processing configuration possible, allowing data to be replicated rapidly and inexpensively over the Internet, without the need for leased lines, helping keep down line costs. This has made it low-cost disaster recovery possible for Paraca, protecting and remotely replicating its information assets, the foundation of the company’s management, used by the company’s sales division.
Paraca is a rental parking lot business operator, and as its operations have expanded, so has the amount of important information it needs for parking lot construction, such as local area information and maps and registration related documentation. As the volume of this information has increased, the protection of these important information assets has become an urgent issue.
In this system, DataKeeper was embedded in the groupware database MySQL used by Paraca, automatically performing real-time data replication to standby servers located in Osaka at the same time as it is written to the main database on the servers located in Tokyo. This not only protects the database, but, by locating the standby equipment at a distant location, enables the system to be used for disaster recovery. Paraca has also been relieved of its previous need to perform daily backups, and, as data can now be restored to the point immediately preceding a system fault, Paraca no longer has to worry about lost data.
*1 Data replication: Software which performs real-time storage of duplicate data at another location, protecting data and supporting rapid recovery in the event of a failure

* IP-VPN: Virtual Private Network (VPN) which uses wide-area IP transmission networks owned by telecommunications carriers.
