HitachiSoft Releases "Data Trans Guardian" Security Solution for
Running Separate Environments on a Single Client PC
Software enables users to simultaneously run secure and general use environments on one PC to prevent breaches of confidential information and reduce the number of client PCs
TOKYO, December 25, 2007 - HitachiSoft today released the Data Trans Guardian security solution, which enables users to simultaneously run two separate environments-one for handling highly confidential data and another for general use-on a single PC. By running two separate environments on a single machine, users are spared the trouble of using two separate machines. The solution also reduces PC deployment costs for organizations while saving space and improving work efficiency.
Organizations have grown increasingly concerned about security and internal controls in the last few years due to frequent incidents involving security breaches, as well as the introduction of legislative changes such as Japan's new Company Law and Financial Instruments and Exchange Act. Leakage of personal information, whether occurring through unauthorized removal of information by internal personnel or use of Winny and other file sharing software, can have a significant financial impact on corporations. In addition, these breaches of information can damage the brand and public reputation of companies, which is spurring the need for urgent countermeasures by organizations.
Corporations and organizations that handle personal information and other highly confidential information can employ a number of strategies to prevent security breaches, such as choosing to manage completely separate networks-one for handling confidential information and another for general use. Separation of the networks helps to prevent security breaches due to causes like unauthorized access from the Internet and information leakage over the Internet because of carelessness by internal personnel.
Creating a separate high security network usually requires users to access different machines for each network, resulting in the deployment of more than one PC per user. Duplication of machines creates numerous issues for organizations by increasing costs for deployment and IT management, and taking up more space. Furthermore, transferring information such as websites and email from the general use network to the high security network requires that users first save the information to an external storage medium, which is not only inconvenient but also creates new risks for information leakage from unauthorized removal of the external storage medium.
HitachiSofts Data Trans Guardian offers a secure solution by enabling users to run two separate environments-one for handling highly confidential data and another for general use-on a single computer. Data Trans Guardian keeps each environment completely separate and prohibits the transfer of data from the high security network to the general use network, in order to prevent leakage of confidential information to an external network. At the same time, Data Trans Guardian enhances convenience by enabling the transfer of data from the general use network to the high security network, either through file transfers or by copying data to a clipboard.
The features of Data Trans Guardian are made possible by leveraging virtualization technology and SELinux1. HitachiSoft will supply client PC systems installed with Data Trans Guardian software that are configured to simultaneously run dual environments. The systems are intended for customers that handle highly confidential data including government users and enterprise customers in the finance and securities sectors.
Main Features of Data Trans Guardian
1Security-Enhanced Linux (SELinux) is a secure operating system based on the Linux kernel that was primarily developed by the US National Security Agency. SELinux was integrated into the standard version 2.6 of the Linux kernel, and is also used in commercial distributions of server applications. Beginning with the initial release of SELinux in late 2000, HitachiSoft has continued to closely follow the development of SELinux and promote it through the publication of book and magazine articles, and through the development and public release of SELinux management tools and tools to simplify configuration.
