Use of Fat Spread Past its “Best by” Date
URAYASU, CHIBA— Oriental
Land Co., Ltd. has announced that “fat spread (margarine) with mustard” was used one day past the “best by” date established by the manufacturer in the “Mile High Deli Stack” sandwiches served at New York Deli in Tokyo DisneySea Park on May 20, 2007. As manufacturers establish “best by” dates with ample leeway in consideration of data on food safety examinations, Oriental Land believes there are no health concerns in having consumed the above sandwiches. However, Oriental Land considers this to be a very serious matter and will strengthen its procedures to prevent any reoccurrence of this kind, as well as to observe proper work flow and checks. 1.

・
Cause of Error
When the delivered ingredient was opened into a container for food preparations, the restaurant staff forgot to write the “best by” date on the “best by/consume by date sticker” affixed to each container. Therefore, the staff did not realize that the fat spread was one day past its “best by” date (May 19), and continued to use this ingredient.
2.
Preventing a Reoccurrence
・
We will strengthen the procedure of confirming the ingredients’ “best by” dates at
the time of food preparation, and make certain that the “best by” dates are written on the “best by/consume by date stickers” that are attached to the ingredients. We will also establish a new procedure of drawing a diagonal line across the “best by/consume by date sticker” for ingredients without “best by” dates. ・
When ingredients with blank “best by/consume by date stickers” are found at the
time of confirming “best by” dates during food preparation, we will make sure that such ingredients are not used. ・
We will increase our efforts to educate all restaurant staff on the importance of
food safety. In addition, we will strengthen our management system by reviewing
